Help: Browse Books

Browse Books allows you to find a book by Title, Gerritsen Index Term, or Library of Congress Subject Term.

Whenever you click the Browse Books link in the main navigation, the books will be displayed alphabetically by title, starting at with A as the default. The display can be changed to browse by Gerritsen Index Terms or Library of Congress Subject Terms.

Changing the browse books display

There are three different ways to browse books in The Gerritsen Collection.

Browse by title

This is the default browse view, books are listed alphabetically by title. One letter of the alphabet is displayed at a time, to view books whose titles begin with a particular letter simply click the linked letter in the alphabet displayed at the top of the page. If there are no books whose titles begin with a specific letter that letter will be greyed out and will not be linked.

Browse by Gerritsen Index Terms

A hierarchical index that divides books by the Gerritsen Collection's own headings, such as Biography and Autobiography or History and Social Conditions. The view can be expanded to show further subdivisions and record items.

Browse by Library of Congress Subject Terms

A hierarchical index listing broad subjects, such as Abortion or Suffrage, subjects are listed alphabetically. One letter of the alphabet is displayed at a time, to view subjects whose beginning with a particular letter simply click the linked letter in the alphabet displayed at the top of the page. If there are no subjects that begin with a specific letter that letter will be greyed out and will not be linked. The view can be expanded to show further subdivisions and record items.

Selecting records

You can select records in Browse Books and transfer them to the Marked List:

  1. Check the Add to Marked List box within an entry to select the individual record, or click Mark/Clear all items on this page to select all the records on the current page.

The selected records will be transferred to your Marked List. Selected records, as well as having their Add to Marked List Box checked, will have a darker background colour to records that have not been selected.

To de-select records either:

  • Check theAdd to Marked Listbox within an entry
  • or check theMark/Clear all items on this page to de-select all the records on the page

You can click the Marked List link to view the current entries in your Marked List at any time.

Displaying the full citation

To view the full citation for an item in browse Books, click the hyperlinked record title.

Displaying the full text

It is possible to access the full text, where available, for an item from Browse Books. To view the full text of an item, click on the View full text link within an entry.
