The Gerritsen Collection's Search page allows you to search for records based on specific criteria.

What types of search can I perform?

You can quickly find information by using one or any combination of the search boxes: Keyword, Author, Book or Article Title Keyword, Publisher, Place of publication , Language and/or Year of Publication. Further options are available for searching on books and searching on periodicals.

If you need help deciding what to enter into a search box, you can click the relevant Select from a list link. This displays a list of appropriate terms for you to select, which are then transferred back to the relevant search box when you click Select.

To narrow the scope of your search you can join together your search terms using special sets of predefined words called operators. Boolean and proximity searching provides more information on how to use these operators.

How do I find information quickly?

To list all records containing a particular word:

  1. Enter the words you wish to search for in the Keyword box and click the Search button.

Note: Use the predefined operators if you wish to perform a search for multiple keywords which are not usually found next to each other in the same phrase.

If you want to search for a particular phrase, place quotation marks around all the words that make up the phrase. For example, "cotton weaving".

To use the "Limit search to" option in your search:

  1. Select one of the following radio buttons: All documents, Books only, Periodical articles only. The default is All documents .
  2. Enter the words you wish to search for in the Keyword box.
  3. Click the Search button.

The Search Results page will be displayed, listing all records containing the word(s) you entered.

How do I perform more complex searches?

To search for records by author:

  1. Enter an author into the Author box, or choose the author you want from the Select from a list page.
  2. Click the Search button.

The List of Results page will be displayed, listing the records for your chosen author(s).

To search for records by title keyword:

  1. Enter a word(s) into the Book or Article title keyword box.
  2. Click the Search button.

The Search Results page will be displayed, listing the records for your chosen title(s).

To search for records by publisher:

  1. Enter a publisher into the Publisher box, or choose the publisher you want from the Select from a list page.
  2. Click the Search button.

The Search Results page will be displayed, listing the records for your chosen publisher(s).

To search for records by place of publication:

  1. Enter a place into the Place of publication box, or choose the place you want from the Select from a list page.
  2. Click the Search button.

The Search Results page will be displayed, listing the records for your chosen place(s).

To search for records by language:

  1. Enter a language into the Language box, or choose the language you want from the Select from a list page.
  2. Click the Search button.

The Search Results page will be displayed, listing the records for your chosen language(s).

To search for records by year of publication:

To list items published between certain years or to search over a range of sessions:

  1. Enter the start year of the period (in full) in the Year From box.
  2. Enter the end year of the period (in full) in the Year To box.
  3. Click the Search button.

The Search Results page will be displayed.

If you want to limit your search to one year please enter the year in the From box and leave the To box blank.

Additional book search options

To search for books by subject

  1. Enter a subject into the Subject box, or choose the subject you want from the Select from a list page.
  2. Click the Search button.

The Search Results page will be displayed, listing the records for your chosen subject(s).

To search for books by Gerritsen index

  1. Enter a topic into the Gerritsen Index box, or choose the topic you want from the Select from a list page.
  2. Click the Search button.

The Search Results page will be displayed, listing the records for your chosen topic(s)

Note: If the only fields you enter terms for on the search page are the additional book search options then your search will only return book results matching those terms. If you use additional book and periodical search options then both book and article results will be returned.

Additional periodical search options

To search for periodicals by title

  1. Enter a title into the Periodical Title box, or choose the title you want from the Select from a list page.
  2. Click the Search button.

The Search Results page will be displayed, listing the records for your chosen title(s).

To search for books by article type

  1. Select any number of the check boxes for Article type, these include; All, editorial cartoon, letter, obituary, poetry, recipe and statistics.
  2. Click the Search button.

The Search Results page will be displayed, listing the records for your chosen genre(s)

Note: If the only fields you enter terms for on the search page are the additional periodical search options then your search will only return periodical results matching those terms. If you use additional book and periodical search options then both book and article results will be returned.

Examples and tips

TIP: All searches are case-insensitive, so you don't have to know whether a word should be capitalized or not. For example, there is no difference between london, London or LonDon.

Results Options

How can I change the order in which my results are sorted?

You can choose the order in which records are sorted in the Search Results by using the Sort results drop-down list; click the arrow to the right of the box and choose the relevant option from the list that appears. You can choose to sort your results by:

  • Relevance
  • Alphabetically by author
  • Alphabetically by title
  • Oldest record first
  • Most recent record first

How can I change the number of results displayed per page?

You can choose whether to display 20 or 50 entries on the Search Results using the Display drop-down list; click the arrow to the right of the box and choose the relevant option from the list that appears. The option chose will persist for your whole session unless it is changed again.
